What if finasteride treatment does not relieve hair loss?

Finasteride is used for particular patterns of hair loss, so persistent shedding may mean the pattern needs reassessment or that another condition is present. Hair growth changes slowly, and an apparent lack of improvement can also reflect inconsistent use, a recent illness, nutritional problems, thyroid disease, scalp inflammation, or a medication effect. Sudden loss, patchy bald areas, broken hairs, or scalp pain do not fit every pattern treated with finasteride.

Take finasteride exactly as prescribed and do not change the dose or stop it without discussing this with the prescriber. Keep consistent photographs in the same lighting and record when shedding began, whether it is diffuse or patchy, and any illness, weight change, new medicine, or scalp symptoms.
