What if ear wax removal does not relieve ringing in the ears?

Wax can change the way sound reaches the eardrum and may contribute to ringing, but tinnitus can also occur with hearing changes, noise exposure, an ear infection, jaw tension, medication effects or other ear conditions. Removing wax therefore may not stop the sound. Notice whether the ringing is in one ear or both, constant or intermittent, and whether it matches your heartbeat.

A clinician can inspect the ear and discuss a hearing test. Persistent one-sided ringing, a pulsing sound or ringing accompanied by hearing change deserves particular attention because those details help determine the right assessment.

Arrange a review if the ringing remains troublesome, affects sleep or concentration, or continues after the ear has healed from removal. Protect your ears from loud sound, but avoid complete silence if it makes the ringing more noticeable; gentle background sound may be more comfortable. Keep a brief record of triggers, timing, medicines and associated symptoms.

Do not put objects into the ear or repeat wax treatment without advice. Ask whether your hearing should be tested and whether a medication or jaw problem could be contributing.

Seek urgent assessment for ringing that starts with sudden hearing loss, severe vertigo, facial weakness, new neurological symptoms or a severe headache. Arrange prompt medical review for a pulsing noise, one-sided ringing with new hearing change, ear discharge, significant pain or fever.
