What If Cryotherapy Does Not Relieve Skin Bumps?

Cryotherapy freezes selected tissue, but the treated area may need time to form a crust, heal, and settle. A bump can also persist when the lesion is deeper than expected, only part of it was treated, or the original diagnosis was uncertain. Some bumps are not appropriate for freezing and need a different treatment or a closer examination.

Do not assume that a persistent bump is harmless or that it represents treatment failure alone. Its colour, surface, firmness, growth, and symptoms help the clinician decide what should happen next.

Book a review with the treating clinician or a dermatologist. Note when the bump was frozen, how it changed afterward, and whether it bleeds, crusts, itches, hurts, or returns. Avoid picking the scab, applying unapproved acids, or freezing the area again. Protect the healing skin as instructed and keep the follow-up appointment.

Arrange prompt assessment for a bump that grows, repeatedly bleeds, develops an open sore, changes colour or shape, or becomes increasingly painful. Seek urgent advice for spreading redness, pus, fever, or rapidly worsening swelling after treatment. A clinician should examine these changes rather than treating them at home.

Ask what the bump was thought to be, whether the healing course is expected, how long to observe it, and whether a different treatment or sample is needed. Ask which changes should trigger an earlier appointment.
