A compressed nerve can need time to recover, especially when symptoms were present for a long period or nerve function was significantly affected. Numbness may also come from the neck, another part of the arm, diabetes-related nerve changes, or a different hand condition. The clinician can map which fingers are affected, test strength and sensation, inspect the scar, and consider nerve testing or imaging when appropriate.

Keep the follow-up appointment even if the incision looks healed. Describe whether numbness is constant, nocturnal, improving, or spreading, and mention tingling, burning, neck pain, or elbow symptoms. Protect an insensate hand from heat and cuts, follow wound and activity instructions, and do not lean on the palm or begin forceful gripping before clearance. A hand therapist may guide scar care, movement, and gradual function.

Seek prompt help for a hand that becomes pale, blue, unusually cold, or rapidly swollen, or for severe pain that is not controlled by the agreed plan. New inability to move the fingers, spreading redness, wound drainage, fever, or sudden weakness needs urgent assessment rather than waiting for routine recovery.

Ask whether the numbness follows the median nerve, what recovery changes are expected, whether the neck or another compression site needs checking, and whether nerve studies, hand therapy, or another treatment would clarify the next step.
