Some tenderness can remain while the opening heals, but pain that persists, worsens, or returns deserves assessment. The cyst may have refilled, an abscess may still be present, or the wound may be irritated. Pain can also come from skin inflammation, pelvic-floor muscle spasm, nerve sensitivity, or a separate vulval condition. A clinician can examine the area and decide whether testing, treatment for infection, or another procedure is appropriate.

Contact the clinician who performed the procedure and describe when the pain began, whether it is improving, and whether swelling or discharge has returned. Keep the area clean and dry, use only the pain relief advised for you, and avoid squeezing the area or inserting products into the wound. Loose cotton underwear and avoiding activities that rub the vulva may reduce irritation. Do not start leftover antibiotics without advice.

Seek urgent medical care for rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain, fever, feeling faint or very unwell, spreading redness, heavy bleeding, or difficulty passing urine. These features can signal infection, a collection that needs treatment, or another problem requiring prompt examination.

Ask whether the wound is healing as expected, whether the cyst or abscess has returned, and whether another cause could explain the pain. You can also ask which pain medicines are suitable, whether a swab or scan is needed, and what symptoms should trigger an urgent review.
