Short answer

If balance and proprioception training does not relieve knee giving way, arrange a clinical reassessment rather than increasing the exercises on your own.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What persistent giving way can mean

The knee may still lack strength, coordination, or confidence after training. Giving way can also reflect pain-related inhibition, ligament or meniscus injury, kneecap instability, arthritis, or difficulty controlling the hip and ankle. A clinician can compare both knees, observe walking and single-leg control, and decide whether imaging or a different rehabilitation approach is needed.

Useful next steps

Record when the knee buckles, whether it follows a twist or pain, and whether swelling appears afterward. Pause drills that repeatedly trigger a collapse, but keep gentle movement within comfortable limits. Take your exercise list to the physiotherapist or orthopaedic clinician; the programme may need progressive strengthening, movement retraining, a brace, or treatment of the underlying injury. Until reviewed, use a handrail and avoid uneven ground if the knee feels unreliable.

When to seek care promptly

Seek urgent assessment after a new injury if the knee is visibly deformed, rapidly swollen, locked, or impossible to bear weight on. Prompt medical help is also appropriate for a hot red knee with fever, or for calf swelling and breathlessness. Repeated unexplained buckling, worsening pain, or new numbness should be discussed soon even without these warning signs.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the pattern suggests ligament, meniscus, kneecap, muscle, or nerve involvement; which exercises are safe now; whether a brace or walking aid would help; and what findings would make imaging or specialist review useful.

Questions people ask

Should I keep doing the exercises?

Continue only movements that feel controlled and do not cause repeated buckling; ask your clinician to modify the programme.

Can training miss the real problem?

Yes. Training may not address a structural injury, pain inhibition, or a problem elsewhere in the leg.
