What if antiviral treatment does not relieve painful skin?

Pain may continue when the infection is still active, treatment began after symptoms had progressed, or the medicine is not suited to the cause. Pain can also remain after a viral skin problem has settled because irritated nerves take time to calm. A different condition, such as inflammation, a bacterial infection, or irritation from a product, can produce similar discomfort. Do not assume that ongoing pain proves the antiviral has failed. Note when each dose was taken, whether new spots or blisters appeared, and whether the pain is burning, tender, itchy, or worsened by touch. This record makes the review more useful.

Contact the prescriber or a dermatologist if pain is not easing within the expected review period, or if new skin changes appear. Take the medicine exactly as directed unless the prescriber changes the plan; do not double a missed dose. Keep the area clean, avoid picking or rubbing it, and pause fragranced products that sting.
