What if antibiotic treatment does not relieve sore throat?

A sore throat may come from a virus, bacterial infection, allergies, dry air, reflux, smoke, or irritation. Antibiotics do not treat viral illnesses or every throat problem, and soreness can remain while inflamed tissue recovers. Severe or persistent symptoms may require an examination of the throat, neck, ears, and breathing. Tell the clinician about fever, cough, rash, swollen glands, difficulty swallowing, voice change, and recent exposure to illness. Ongoing pain does not automatically mean that a different antibiotic is needed.

Use the antibiotic exactly as prescribed and contact the prescriber if the throat is not improving, is worsening, or improves and then returns. Drink cool or warm fluids as tolerated, choose soft foods, and avoid smoke. Gargling with warm salt water may soothe some adults and older children who can gargle safely. Ask a pharmacist or clinician which pain relief is suitable for you, especially if you have stomach, kidney, or liver problems or take other medicines. Do not take leftover antibiotics or share them.

Seek emergency help if you cannot breathe, cannot swallow saliva, are drooling, develop rapidly increasing throat or neck swelling, or have a muffled voice with severe one-sided pain. Urgent assessment is also needed for dehydration, confusion, a severe rash, or rapid deterioration. Children who struggle to drink or breathe need prompt medical attention.

Ask: Is this likely to be viral, bacterial, or another problem? Do I need a throat test? What pain relief can I use safely? Could reflux, allergy, or smoke be contributing? Which swallowing or breathing changes require immediate help?
