What if anaphylaxis emergency treatment does not relieve shortness of breath?

Ongoing breathlessness can indicate that an allergic reaction is still affecting the airways or circulation. Swelling may involve the throat, while tightening in the chest or wheezing can make breathing harder. An initial treatment may not be enough, and symptoms can change quickly, so continued shortness of breath needs professional assessment.

Call emergency services, use speakerphone if needed, and say where you are and what treatment was given. Sit upright if that makes breathing easier. If you feel faint, lie down with your legs raised, unless breathing is worse in that position. Do not walk around, eat, drink, or drive. Use another prescribed emergency dose only according to your action plan or dispatcher guidance.

Severe or persistent breathlessness, noisy breathing, a hoarse voice, throat or tongue swelling, blue or grey lips, confusion, faintness, collapse, or rapidly worsening symptoms require emergency help now. Do not wait for antihistamines or other medicines to work. Even if breathing improves, emergency observation is needed after suspected anaphylaxis because symptoms can return.
