What if allergy medication does not relieve runny nose?

A runny nose may reflect an allergy, a cold, sinus irritation, changes in temperature, smoke, strong smells, or medication-related effects. Allergy medicines differ in what they target, so one product may not help every pattern of nasal symptoms. Mucus that is clear and watery can occur with several causes; its appearance alone does not identify the cause.

Limit contact with suspected dust, pollen, pets, smoke, and strong fragrances. Drink fluids and consider a saline nasal rinse or spray if a pharmacist says it is suitable for you; use sterile, distilled, or previously boiled and cooled water for a rinse. Record the timing, triggers, congestion, fever, facial pain, and all medicines used. Do not keep adding nasal products or exceed label directions without advice.

Seek emergency help for difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or tongue, faintness, or a rapidly worsening reaction. Arrange prompt assessment for severe facial pain, high fever, confusion, dehydration, symptoms after a head injury, or a runny nose that does not settle or repeatedly disrupts sleep and daily activities.
