What if acid reflux medication does not relieve excessive burping?

Burping releases air from the upper digestive tract. Acid reflux medication reduces acid exposure, but it may not reduce air swallowing or the muscle pattern that brings air back up. Eating quickly, chewing gum, fizzy drinks, smoking, talking while eating and nasal congestion can all increase swallowed air. Constipation, indigestion, food intolerance or a problem affecting stomach emptying may also contribute.

Notice whether burping is linked with heartburn, regurgitation, bloating, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. This pattern helps a clinician decide whether the treatment, diagnosis or both need review.

Book a review if excessive burping persists despite taking the medicine as prescribed. Do not increase, stop or switch medication without advice. Keep a brief symptom diary covering meals, drinks, timing, posture and associated symptoms. Eat slowly, limit fizzy drinks and gum, and avoid smoking.
