What happens if hives is not treated?

A flare may fade in one area and appear elsewhere, with itching that interrupts sleep, work, or concentration. Scratching can irritate the skin and create open areas that are more vulnerable to infection. Some people develop swelling of the lips, eyelids, hands, or feet, called angioedema. Hives lasting or recurring over a longer period may need assessment for chronic hives and possible triggers.

Arrange a clinical review if episodes keep returning, interfere with sleep, or do not settle. A clinician may recommend an antihistamine treatment and review medicines, infections, foods, heat, pressure, or other possible triggers. Keep a brief record of when welts appear, how long they last, and any swelling. Avoid scratching, hot showers, and tight clothing during a flare; use cool compresses instead.

Call emergency services immediately for trouble breathing, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, confusion, or difficulty swallowing. Seek prompt medical assessment for rapidly worsening swelling, widespread painful rash, fever, skin peeling, or hives that began soon after a new medicine or food. Do not wait to see whether the welts disappear when breathing or swallowing is affected.
