What happens if tonsillitis is not treated?

Tonsillitis can be caused by a virus or bacteria. Viral illness often improves with supportive care, while bacterial infection such as strep throat may need testing and antibiotic treatment. Without appropriate care, throat pain, fever and swollen glands can continue. A collection of pus beside a tonsil can cause severe pain on one side, a muffled voice, drooling or difficulty opening the mouth. Rarely, infection can spread beyond the throat.

Rest, drink frequent small amounts, and use suitable pain or fever relief according to the label or a clinician’s advice. A GP consultation can assess the throat and decide whether a swab or other test is needed. Take antibiotics only when prescribed, and complete the course as directed. Do not share leftover antibiotics, because they may not treat the cause and can delay the right assessment.

Get urgent help if you cannot swallow fluids or saliva, have trouble breathing, become very drowsy, or develop rapidly increasing throat swelling. Seek prompt review for persistent fever, worsening earache, severe one-sided throat pain, or signs of dehydration such as very dark urine and dizziness.

Ask whether the illness appears viral or bacterial, whether testing is needed, and which pain-relief options are suitable for you. If episodes recur, ask whether another throat problem or referral needs to be considered.
