What happens if sinusitis is not treated?

Sinusitis is inflammation of the spaces around the nose. Swelling can block drainage, trapping mucus and making the nose feel blocked. Facial pressure, reduced smell, runny nose, cough or earache may continue while the inflammation remains. A common cold or allergic rhinitis can contribute to symptoms, and not every episode needs antibiotics.

Most mild cases improve with time and supportive care, but persistent or worsening symptoms can need assessment. Rarely, infection can extend to tissues around the eye or, exceptionally, deeper structures.

Arrange a GP consultation if symptoms are severe, keep returning, last longer than expected, or interfere with sleep and daily activities. A clinician can examine the nose and throat, consider allergies or another cause, and advise on fluids, saline care or other treatment. Antibiotic treatment is used only when a bacterial infection is suspected or its benefits outweigh its downsides.

Get urgent medical help for swelling or redness around an eye, vision changes, severe headache, confusion, a stiff neck, repeated vomiting or rapidly worsening illness. Contact a clinician promptly if facial pain, fever or blocked-nose symptoms are becoming more intense rather than settling.

Ask whether the symptoms fit sinusitis, common cold or allergic rhinitis, whether antibiotics are appropriate, how to relieve blockage safely, and what change should prompt review.
