What happens if plica syndrome is not treated?

Short answer
If plica syndrome is not treated, irritation may persist, causing knee pain, clicking or catching and making stairs, squats and sport harder.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Commonly affected movement
- Repeated knee bending and loading
- Symptoms to describe
- Pain, clicking, swelling, catching or restricted movement
What persistent irritation can do
A synovial plica is a fold of tissue inside the knee. Repeated bending, increased training or local irritation can make it sensitive as it moves near the kneecap. Ongoing symptoms may lead you to limit activity or walk differently, which can reduce confidence and leg conditioning. Knee Clicking and Grinding can occur, but sound alone does not show how serious a problem is. A diagnosis may need to distinguish plica irritation from cartilage, tendon or meniscus problems.
Useful next steps
Arrange a clinical assessment if pain, swelling or catching continues. Physiotherapy may improve quadriceps and hip control, flexibility and the way load is introduced. Temporarily reduce movements that repeatedly provoke symptoms, then return gradually as advised. If symptoms remain limiting despite appropriate non-surgical care, a specialist may discuss Knee Arthroscopy and its potential benefits and risks.
When to seek care
Seek prompt care for a knee that becomes truly locked, a sudden inability to bear weight, substantial swelling after injury, fever, redness or severe pain. Knee Locking that prevents normal movement warrants assessment rather than repeated forceful bending.
Questions for your doctor
What makes plica irritation more likely than a meniscus or cartilage problem? Which exercises are suitable now? What does true locking mean in my case? When would imaging or arthroscopy be considered?

Questions people ask
Does untreated plica syndrome always need surgery?
No. Many cases are assessed and managed with activity modification and rehabilitation; persistent mechanical symptoms may need specialist review.
Is knee clicking alone an emergency?
Usually not, but clicking with pain, swelling, catching or restricted movement should be assessed.
