What happens if piriformis syndrome is not treated?

The piriformis is a deep buttock muscle close to the sciatic nerve. Ongoing tightness or irritation can cause deep Buttock Pain, tingling or Radiating Leg Pain. Sitting for long periods, climbing stairs or rotating the hip may become difficult. Guarding the painful side can reduce hip strength and change stride mechanics. Symptoms labelled piriformis syndrome can overlap with Sciatica from the lower back, so an examination matters before assuming the source.

Book an assessment when symptoms persist, recur or interfere with sleep, work or activity. Physiotherapy may address hip strength, flexibility, trunk control and sitting or running habits. A clinician may discuss Dry Needling or a Cortisone Injection in selected situations after considering other causes. Avoid forcing stretches or returning suddenly to high-load exercise; use symptom-guided, gradual activity instead.

Seek urgent care for new loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin, rapidly worsening leg weakness, or severe pain after significant trauma. Arrange prompt assessment for progressive weakness, widespread numbness, fever, unexplained weight loss or pain that is constant at rest.
