What happens if peripheral neuropathy is not treated?

Peripheral neuropathy affects nerves outside the brain and spinal cord, often in the feet or hands. Numbness, tingling, burning pain, altered temperature sensation, or weakness can interfere with balance and fine movements. Reduced feeling means a person may not notice a blister, cut, burn, or tight shoe. Repeated unnoticed injury can become infected, and a foot wound may deepen into a diabetic foot ulcer, particularly when diabetes is also present. The underlying cause matters; possibilities include type 2 diabetes, alcohol-related nerve injury, vitamin problems, or other conditions.

Book an assessment for persistent numbness, tingling, burning, weakness, or new balance problems. A clinician may examine sensation and reflexes, review medicines and alcohol use, and arrange a blood test or diabetes screening when appropriate. Check feet and hands each day, use well-fitting footwear, protect numb skin from heat, and treat cuts promptly. Do not stop prescribed medicine without advice; managing the cause and symptoms can help protect function.

Seek urgent care for rapidly developing weakness, trouble walking, loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness affecting one side with facial drooping or speech difficulty. Obtain prompt medical advice for a foot wound, spreading redness, drainage, fever, or skin turning dark, especially if sensation is reduced.
