Short answer

If pelvic organ prolapse is not treated, the bulge or pressure may become more troublesome and bladder, bowel, sexual, or vaginal symptoms can persist.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Symptoms may involve
The vagina, bladder, bowel, sexual comfort, or pelvic pressure.
Non-surgical options
Pelvic floor physiotherapy and a vaginal pessary may help.

Possible changes over time

Pelvic organ prolapse happens when weakened pelvic support allows the bladder, bowel, or uterus to press into the vagina. It may cause a vaginal bulge, dragging or heaviness, difficulty emptying the bladder or bowel, leaking urine, or discomfort during sex. Some prolapses stay manageable; others become more noticeable with standing, lifting, coughing, or constipation.

Skin exposed by a bulge can become irritated or sore. Difficulty emptying the bladder can increase discomfort and may need assessment. Menopause-related tissue changes can also affect symptoms, but prolapse is not something you need to tolerate without support.

Ways to manage it

Arrange an assessment to identify which organ is affected and how symptoms relate to your bladder and bowel. Pelvic floor physiotherapy, treating constipation, adjusting heavy lifting, and a vaginal pessary may help. If symptoms remain disruptive, a clinician can explain pelvic floor repair surgery or sacrocolpopexy and how recovery fits your circumstances.

When to seek care

Seek urgent help if you cannot pass urine, have severe pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, fever, or a bulge that becomes suddenly very painful or changes colour. Book a prompt review for worsening pressure, recurrent urinary symptoms, bleeding from irritated tissue, or a bulge that interferes with walking, sex, or daily tasks.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which compartment is prolapsing, whether your bladder is emptying properly, whether a pessary or physiotherapy suits you, and what surgery would involve if symptoms continue.
