What happens if ovarian cancer is not treated?

Ovarian cancer can involve the ovaries, fallopian tubes, pelvic tissues, or lining of the abdomen. As it grows, it may press on the bowel or bladder, causing fullness, constipation, urinary changes, or abdominal discomfort. Cancer cells may also spread beyond the pelvis.

Fluid collecting in the abdomen is called malignant ascites. It can make the abdomen feel tight or swollen and may affect appetite, movement, or breathing. Abdominal swelling has several possible causes, so it needs assessment rather than a conclusion based on the symptom alone.

Arrange prompt review with a gynaecologic oncology team if ovarian cancer is suspected or confirmed. Evaluation may include examination, blood tests, imaging such as pelvic ultrasound, and tissue assessment. Genomic tumour profiling and information about BRCA gene mutation or Lynch syndrome may help guide treatment choices.

Treatment plans differ according to stage, tumour features, symptoms, and general health. Ask about surgery, systemic treatment, symptom control, and how to manage eating, activity, and abdominal pressure while decisions are made.

Seek urgent help for severe or rapidly increasing abdominal swelling, new breathing difficulty, persistent vomiting, inability to keep fluids down, fainting, severe pain, or inability to pass stool or gas. Contact the care team quickly if symptoms suddenly change.
