What happens if osteoarthritis is not treated?

Short answer
Untreated osteoarthritis may cause increasing pain, stiffness, reduced joint movement and difficulty with everyday tasks over time.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Preserve useful movement and daily function
Possible effects
Osteoarthritis changes the tissues inside and around a joint. Pain may make you avoid walking, stairs or gripping, which can weaken supporting muscles and reduce confidence. Stiffness after rest may last longer, and reduced range of motion can affect dressing, driving or work. Symptoms vary by joint and do not always progress in a straight line.
A clinician can check whether your symptoms fit osteoarthritis and look for treatable contributors. New swelling, locking or sudden loss of function may indicate a different or additional problem.
Ways to protect function
A management plan may combine physiotherapy, exercise therapy, pacing, sleep support and strength work. Weight management for joint pain may reduce load on weight-bearing joints when relevant. Anti-inflammatory medication, a cortisone injection or a hyaluronic acid injection may be discussed, depending on the joint, your health and previous treatments. The aim is better function and symptom control, not simply enduring pain.
When to seek care
Book an assessment when pain limits activity, stiffness is persistent, or symptoms are becoming harder to manage. Seek urgent care for a hot, red, very swollen joint, fever with joint pain, a major injury, or sudden inability to bear weight or use the limb.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which exercises suit your joint, how to pace activity, whether medication or an injection is appropriate, and what change should prompt an earlier review.
