What happens if oesophageal cancer is not treated?

A tumour in the oesophagus may narrow the passage for food and fluids. Difficulty swallowing can progress from solid foods to softer foods or liquids, making dehydration, weakness, and poor nutrition more likely. Ongoing irritation may cause pain, indigestion, coughing, or regurgitation.

Cancer can extend into nearby tissues or travel to distant organs. Bleeding may occur, and vomiting blood is an emergency symptom. These features are not specific to cancer, so persistent indigestion or swallowing changes need medical assessment rather than self-diagnosis.

Contact a doctor or oncology service promptly if oesophageal cancer is suspected or diagnosed. Assessment may include an endoscopy with tissue sampling and scans to understand the tumour and guide a plan. Treatment can involve chemotherapy, immunotherapy, surgery, radiotherapy, or supportive measures depending on the findings.

Until reviewed, choose foods and drinks that you can swallow safely, take small sips if advised, and report reduced intake or weight loss. Do not delay care because symptoms fluctuate.

Seek emergency care for vomiting blood, black stools, severe chest pain, breathing difficulty, choking, inability to swallow fluids, or signs of dehydration such as faintness and very little urine. Rapidly worsening swallowing difficulty also needs urgent clinical advice.
