What happens if multiple myeloma is not treated?

Multiple myeloma is a cancer of plasma cells in the bone marrow. Active disease can crowd out cells that make red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. This may lead to Persistent Fatigue, infections, or bruising and bleeding more easily.

Myeloma can also damage bone structure, causing Persistent Bone Pain, fractures, or high calcium levels. Abnormal proteins may strain the kidneys. Spinal Cord Compression is an emergency complication if disease or a collapsed bone presses on the spinal cord.

Arrange review with a myeloma specialist and ask which blood, urine, imaging, and bone-marrow tests are needed. Smouldering Myeloma is different from active myeloma and may be monitored in selected situations, so the distinction matters.

Treatment may combine medicines with Bone-Strengthening Therapy, Radiotherapy for a painful focal area, Autologous Stem Cell Transplant, or CAR T-Cell Therapy. The choice depends on disease features, fitness, prior treatment, and preferences.

Seek emergency help for new leg weakness, numbness, loss of bladder or bowel control, sudden severe back pain, confusion, or inability to stand. Contact the team promptly for fever, new infection symptoms, a suspected fracture, or much less urine than usual.
