What Happens If Intertrigo Is Not Treated?

Intertrigo develops where warm, moist skin surfaces rub together, including the groin, underarms, beneath the breasts, and abdominal folds. The affected skin may become red, sore, itchy, macerated, or painful. Continued rubbing can break the skin barrier, making movement and washing uncomfortable.

Once the barrier is damaged, yeast or bacteria may multiply and change the rash. A yeast infection can produce a bright red, irritated area with small nearby spots, while bacterial involvement may cause worsening tenderness, discharge, odour, or crusting. A rash in a fold is not automatically an infection, so treatment should match the cause.

Keep folds gently clean and thoroughly dry, choose breathable clothing, and reduce rubbing where possible. Avoid fragranced products on broken skin. A clinician may recommend topical antifungal treatment when yeast is involved, or address heavy sweating with prescription antiperspirant when appropriate. Do not apply steroid creams or combination products to a fold without advice, because they can mask or worsen some infections.

Arrange review if the rash persists, spreads, repeatedly returns, or does not improve with careful drying. Seek prompt care for increasing warmth, swelling, pus, foul odour, severe pain, fever, or red streaks. Urgent assessment is appropriate if you feel very unwell or the skin is rapidly deteriorating, particularly when diabetes or reduced immunity is part of your medical history.

Ask whether the rash is simple irritation, yeast, bacteria, or another condition; which products are safe on broken skin; and how to prevent recurrence. Mention sweating, friction, new medicines, and any similar rash in the groin or underarms.
