What happens if a herniated disc is not treated?

A herniated disc can press on or inflame a nearby spinal nerve. Depending on its location, symptoms may include lower-back pain with radiating leg pain, neck pain that travels into an arm, altered sensation, or weakness. Avoiding movement because of pain can also reduce strength and confidence. Some episodes settle with time, but ongoing or worsening nerve symptoms deserve assessment because prolonged compression can affect function. A symptom such as leg numbness and tingling does not by itself identify the cause; examination helps distinguish disc irritation from other conditions.

Arrange medical assessment if pain lasts, returns frequently, limits walking or work, or is accompanied by numbness or weakness. Treatment may include guided activity, physiotherapy, medication, or selected procedures. A clinician may discuss an epidural steroid injection for suitable nerve-related pain, or non-surgical spinal decompression where appropriate. Imaging and neurological examination help match treatment to the affected level and the severity of nerve involvement.

Seek emergency care for new bladder or bowel changes with back pain, numbness around the inner thighs or genitals, rapidly worsening leg weakness, or inability to walk safely. Urgent assessment is also needed after major trauma or when pain is accompanied by fever or severe unexplained illness. Do not wait for a routine appointment when these warning signs appear.

Ask which nerve appears affected, whether strength and reflexes are changing, and whether imaging is needed. Discuss safe activity, pain relief, warning signs, and how you will know if a procedure or surgical opinion should be considered.
