What happens if Helicobacter pylori infection is not treated?

H. pylori can irritate the stomach lining over time. This may lead to indigestion, bloating, excessive burping, upper abdominal discomfort or nausea. In some people, the inflammation contributes to a peptic ulcer, which can bleed or cause severe pain. Symptoms alone cannot confirm the infection because many digestive conditions feel similar.

A clinician may recommend testing and, when indicated, an upper endoscopy to inspect the upper digestive tract. Acid reflux medication may ease acid-related symptoms, but it does not replace treatment aimed at clearing the infection.

Arrange an appointment if symptoms persist, recur or are affecting eating and sleep. Tell the clinician about previous ulcers, vomiting, regular pain-reliever use and any antibiotics taken recently. If infection is confirmed, take the prescribed antibiotic treatment exactly as directed and complete the course unless the prescriber changes it. Do not share antibiotics or use leftover tablets. Ask whether follow-up testing is needed after treatment.

Seek urgent medical help for black or tar-like stools, vomiting blood, sudden severe abdominal pain, fainting, marked weakness, persistent vomiting or difficulty swallowing. These signs can indicate bleeding or another problem that needs prompt assessment, even if H. pylori has already been diagnosed.

Ask which test is appropriate, whether medicines need to be paused before testing, what side effects to expect from antibiotics, and how to confirm that the infection has cleared. Ask whether an upper endoscopy is needed if symptoms continue or warning signs are present.
