Pacing repetitive tasks, using larger handles, and alternating activity with rest can reduce strain. Seek prompt medical advice for a suddenly hot, very swollen, or red joint, fever, a new injury, rapidly worsening weakness, or numbness that persists. Urgent assessment is needed if a hand becomes pale or blue, or if you cannot move a finger after trauma. These signs may indicate a problem other than routine osteoarthritis.
