What happens if gallstones is not treated?

Gallstones are hardened deposits that form in the gallbladder. Stones that do not obstruct a duct may cause no symptoms, while a moving stone can trigger steady pain in the upper right or upper middle abdomen, often after a meal. A blockage may affect the gallbladder, the common bile duct or the pancreas. This can produce nausea, vomiting, indigestion or yellowing of the skin and eyes, and may require prompt treatment.

Arrange a GP Consultation if pain returns, follows meals or is accompanied by nausea or indigestion. An Abdominal Ultrasound is commonly used to look for stones and changes around the gallbladder. Keep meals moderate while waiting for review if fatty foods trigger symptoms, and do not use pain medicines beyond the label or your clinician's advice. Treatment depends on symptoms, the stone location and signs of inflammation.

Seek urgent assessment for severe or persistent Abdominal Pain, repeated Vomiting, Jaundice, fever, chills, a swollen abdomen or pain with marked weakness. These features can indicate an obstructed or infected biliary system and should not be watched at home.
