What happens if an elbow dislocation is not treated?

A dislocation changes the position of the elbow bones and can stretch or compress ligaments, nerves, and blood vessels. Leaving it unreduced may increase swelling and make normal alignment more difficult to restore. Healing in a poor position can limit bending and straightening, weaken the arm, or allow the elbow to slip again.

A visible deformity after injury, severe pain, or elbow stiffness should not be managed by trying to force the joint back into place at home. An examination and imaging help identify associated fractures or soft-tissue injury.

Treat a suspected dislocation as urgent: keep the arm still in the position found, support it, remove rings if swelling allows, and attend emergency care. A clinician may use closed reduction with appropriate pain control and then reassess stability, circulation, and nerve function. Physiotherapy later helps restore safe movement without stressing healing tissues.

Go to emergency care immediately for a deformed elbow, a cold or pale hand, absent pulse, worsening swelling, numbness, tingling, weakness, or an inability to move the fingers. These signs can indicate pressure on nerves or blood vessels.
