What happens if dementia is not treated?

Short answer
If dementia is not treated or supported, memory and thinking difficulties may progress, affecting safety, daily activities, communication, and independence.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- First step
- Assess memory and thinking changes rather than assuming the cause.
- Safety focus
- Medicines, falls, nutrition, wandering, and daily tasks.
What can change over time
Dementia describes changes in memory, thinking, language, behaviour, or problem-solving that interfere with everyday life. Without assessment, treatable contributors such as medication effects, sleep problems, mood symptoms, or other illness may be missed. As symptoms progress, a person may lose track of appointments, struggle with cooking or finances, become disoriented, or need help with washing and dressing. Falls, wandering, missed medicines, poor nutrition, and urinary incontinence can create additional health and safety concerns.
What to do
Arrange a GP Consultation when memory problems interfere with usual activities or another person notices a change. A clinician can review medicines, physical health, mood, hearing, sleep, and cognition, then discuss support and future planning. A Mental Health Assessment may help when depression, anxiety, or unusual behaviour is part of the picture. Bring a symptom timeline and, if possible, someone who knows the person's day-to-day changes.
When to seek care
Seek urgent medical help for sudden confusion, a new severe headache, weakness on one side, a fall with injury, inability to stay awake, or immediate danger from wandering or unsafe behaviour. Sudden change is not the same as gradual dementia progression and needs prompt assessment.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what pattern of change has been identified, which causes can be treated, and what support is available at home. Ask about driving, medicines, falls prevention, and who to contact if behaviour or confusion changes quickly.

Questions people ask
Can dementia symptoms have other causes?
Yes. Medicines, mood, sleep, hearing, and other illnesses can affect thinking and should be reviewed.
Does dementia always worsen quickly?
No. The pace and pattern vary, and sudden changes need assessment for another medical cause.
