What Happens If De Quervain's Tenosynovitis Is Not Treated?

De Quervain's tenosynovitis affects tendons that move the thumb as they pass through a narrow covering at the wrist. Repeated lifting, pinching, wringing, or thumb movement can keep the tendon covering irritated. Pain may spread along the thumb side of the wrist, with tenderness or swelling near its base. People often avoid using the thumb, which can reduce hand strength and make ordinary tasks slower. Persistent wrist pain can also be confused with joint, nerve, or other tendon problems, so an examination is useful if it does not settle.

Arrange assessment when pain continues or interferes with lifting, feeding, dressing, or work. Reduce the movements that reproduce pain without stopping all gentle hand use. A thumb-and-wrist splint can limit aggravating motion, while hand therapy can address movement, strength, and task technique. Depending on the examination, a clinician may discuss a cortisone injection or, for persistent symptoms, De Quervain's release.

Seek prompt care for sudden severe pain after an injury, marked redness or warmth, fever, rapidly increasing swelling, or inability to move the thumb. Numbness, a pale or blue hand, or pain that is rapidly worsening also needs urgent review because these findings may signal another problem.
