What happens if skin yeast infection is not treated?

Cutaneous candidiasis is an overgrowth of yeast on the skin, often where moisture and friction collect, such as skin folds, the groin or around nails. Untreated inflammation can make the area itchy, raw and painful. Cracked skin may bleed slightly or allow bacteria to enter. A fold infection may overlap with intertrigo, while infection around a nail can cause paronychia. Other rashes can look similar, so persistent symptoms do not confirm yeast on their own.

Keep affected folds clean and dry, change out of damp clothing, choose breathable fabrics and avoid sharing towels. Do not use steroid cream alone on a suspected fungal or yeast rash unless a clinician tells you to, because it can mask or worsen some infections. A clinician may recommend topical antifungal treatment; oral antifungal treatment may be considered when the infection is extensive, recurrent or not responding as expected.

Arrange an assessment if the rash is spreading, recurrent, painful, involving the nails, or not improving with appropriate care. Seek prompt help for rapidly increasing redness, warmth, swelling, pus, fever, severe pain or red streaks. People with diabetes, reduced immunity or frequent infections should seek advice earlier, because skin breakdown may need closer monitoring and the diagnosis may require confirmation.
