What happens if cervical cancer is not treated?

Cancer may extend from the cervix into the vagina, uterus, bladder, bowel, or the tissues around the pelvis. As it grows, it may lead to bleeding after sex, bleeding between periods, unusual discharge, pelvic pain, back pain, or difficulty passing urine or stool. Spread beyond the pelvis can affect other parts of the body and may cause symptoms related to the organ involved. The course differs according to the tumour, its stage, and the person’s health.

A diagnosis does not by itself determine what will happen next. Examination, scans, and tissue tests help the oncology team understand the extent of disease and discuss treatment choices.

Arrange a prompt appointment with a gynaecologic oncology team. Bring pathology reports, scan results, medicines, and a list of symptoms. Treatment may include surgery such as radical hysterectomy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, radiotherapy, or combinations chosen for the cancer’s stage and biology. If treatment feels difficult to start, ask about symptom control, emotional support, and palliative care; palliative care can be provided alongside cancer treatment.

Seek urgent medical help for heavy or persistent vaginal bleeding, fainting, severe pelvic or abdominal pain, inability to pass urine, repeated vomiting, new confusion, or breathlessness. Contact the oncology team promptly if bleeding after sex, bleeding between periods, pain, discharge, or weakness is worsening.

Ask which tests establish the stage, whether the cancer has reached nearby structures or lymph nodes, what treatment is recommended first, how side effects will be managed, and which symptoms should trigger an urgent call.
