What Happens If Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Is Not Treated?

Carpal tunnel syndrome is compression of the median nerve at the wrist. Early symptoms often include Hand Numbness, tingling, burning, or Wrist Pain, commonly worse at night or during activities that keep the wrist bent. As compression continues, sensation may remain altered for longer periods rather than appearing only occasionally.

Weak Grip can make it harder to hold a cup, turn a key, fasten clothing, or handle small objects. Advanced nerve irritation may affect the muscles at the base of the thumb. Arm Numbness and Tingling can have causes outside the wrist, so a clinician should confirm the source rather than assuming every hand symptom is carpal tunnel syndrome.

Arrange an assessment when symptoms recur, disturb sleep, or affect work and daily tasks. The examination may include sensation, strength, wrist movement, and tests that assess nerve function. Splinting can keep the wrist in a more neutral position for selected people. Other options may include Cortisone Injection or a procedure to release pressure when symptoms remain troublesome.

Seek prompt medical care for rapidly worsening weakness, loss of hand coordination, constant numbness, or difficulty using the hand safely. Sudden one-sided weakness or numbness with facial changes or speech difficulty is an emergency. Do not wait for a wrist appointment in that situation.

Ask whether the median nerve is the likely source, whether testing is needed, and how long to try a Splinting plan. Discuss work or sleep triggers, warning signs of muscle involvement, and when an injection or release procedure should be considered.
