What Happens If Boils Are Not Treated?

A boil is a tender, pus-filled infection around a hair follicle. Some open and drain on their own, but pressure, redness and pain can increase before that happens. Infection may extend into surrounding skin, and several connected boils can form a larger inflamed area. A drained boil can also leave an open wound that needs clean care.

Boils around the nose, upper lip, armpit or groin need particular caution because swelling and deeper infection can be more troublesome in these areas. Recurrent boils may point to friction, skin conditions, bacterial carriage or another health factor that deserves evaluation.

Use a clean warm compress for short periods, keep the area covered with a clean dressing if it is draining, wash your hands after touching it, and do not squeeze, pierce or cut it. Do not share towels, razors or clothing. A clinician may prescribe antibiotics for skin infection when indicated; a larger or walled-off collection may need abscess drainage so the pus can escape safely.

Seek prompt care if redness is spreading, pain is worsening, fever develops, red streaks appear, the boil is on the face or near the eye, or it has not started improving. Get medical advice sooner for diabetes, immune suppression, recurrent boils, or multiple painful lumps. Emergency care is needed for confusion, severe weakness or difficulty breathing.
