What Happens If a Baker's Cyst Is Not Treated?

A Baker's cyst is a fluid-filled swelling behind the knee. Leaving it alone does not always cause harm, especially when it is small and the knee problem producing extra fluid settles. It can, however, remain noticeable and make bending or straightening the knee uncomfortable. Pressure may be more obvious after walking, squatting, or prolonged standing.

The cyst can be associated with conditions such as Knee Osteoarthritis or a Meniscus Tear. Treating the knee irritation may reduce the fluid that feeds the cyst. If the cyst leaks or ruptures, fluid can move into the calf and cause pain, tightness, or swelling that needs prompt assessment because other causes of calf swelling can be serious.

Arrange a clinical assessment if the swelling persists, returns, or affects your movement. The clinician may examine your knee and consider imaging to confirm the cause. Management can include activity changes, treatment of the underlying knee condition, or Physiotherapy to maintain movement and strength. Joint Aspiration may be considered for selected cysts, but removing fluid alone does not always prevent it from returning.

Seek urgent medical care for sudden calf swelling, marked warmth or redness, severe pain, chest pain, or shortness of breath. These symptoms should not be assumed to be from a cyst. Arrange a timely appointment for increasing knee swelling, locking, worsening pain, or difficulty bearing weight.
