What Happens If Atopic Dermatitis Is Not Treated?

Atopic dermatitis can flare and settle, but untreated inflammation may keep the skin dry, cracked and sensitive. Scratching can create a cycle in which the skin barrier becomes weaker and itching becomes harder to control. Repeated rubbing may produce thick, leathery areas called lichen simplex chronicus, or firm itchy nodules known as prurigo nodularis.

Broken skin can become infected. Crusting, oozing, increasing tenderness or rapidly worsening redness may indicate impetigo. Darkening or lightening can remain after inflammation settles, especially on the face or around the eyes; these colour changes do not necessarily mean the eczema is still active.

A clinician can confirm the diagnosis and match treatment to the body area, severity and age. Regular fragrance-free moisturiser helps restore the skin barrier, while prescribed anti-inflammatory treatment can calm a flare. Keep nails short, use lukewarm rather than hot water, choose gentle cleansers, and notice triggers such as heat, sweat, wool or fragranced products. If night itching is affecting rest, mention it specifically because treatment may need adjustment.

Seek prompt care for painful blisters, pus, yellow crusts, rapidly spreading redness, fever, or sudden worsening. Arrange a review when itching repeatedly interrupts sleep, work or school, when the rash involves the eyelids or eyes, or when self-care is not restoring comfort. Urgent assessment is appropriate for facial swelling with breathing or swallowing difficulty.
