What happens if anovulation is not treated?

Anovulation means an ovary does not release an egg during a cycle. Without ovulation, progesterone may not rise in the usual way, so bleeding can become unpredictable or stop. The womb lining may build up and then shed irregularly, sometimes causing unexpectedly heavy bleeding.

Because ovulation is needed for natural conception, ongoing anovulation can make pregnancy harder to achieve. It is a sign with several possible causes, including Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, high prolactin, low energy availability, major stress, thyroid problems or changes in ovarian function. Finding the cause matters.

Book an appointment if periods are repeatedly absent or unpredictable, or if you are trying to conceive. A clinician may review weight and exercise changes, medicines and symptoms, then arrange hormone tests and other checks. Do not start fertility medicine without assessing why ovulation is absent.

Treatment depends on the cause and your goals. Options can include Ovulation Induction, Metformin for PCOS, or, in selected PCOS cases, Ovarian Drilling. If pregnancy is not a current goal, your clinician can also discuss cycle protection and bleeding control.

Seek prompt medical advice for very heavy bleeding, fainting, severe pelvic pain, new headaches with vision changes, or breast discharge unrelated to breastfeeding. These symptoms may need assessment for anaemia, pregnancy or a hormonal cause requiring treatment.
