What happens if allergic rhinitis is not treated?

Allergic rhinitis is an immune response in the lining of the nose. Ongoing swelling can block airflow and encourage mouth breathing. Mucus draining into the throat may cause an itchy throat or sore throat, while congestion can contribute to snoring and disturbed sleep. Smell may become less sharp. Dry, irritated nasal tissue and frequent blowing can contribute to nosebleeds. Symptoms can be seasonal or present throughout the year.

Notice links between symptoms and dust, pollen, pets, mould, or other exposures, then reduce contact where possible. Saline rinsing, used safely, can clear irritants. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on suitable allergy medicines and correct nasal-spray technique. Persistent symptoms may merit assessment for asthma, sinus disease, or another cause rather than repeated self-treatment.

Seek prompt care for breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or throat, faintness, or a rapidly spreading allergic reaction. Arrange assessment for one-sided blockage, recurrent heavy nosebleeds, facial pain, fever, or loss of smell that persists. Snoring with pauses in breathing or marked daytime sleepiness also deserves review because it may reflect a sleep-related breathing problem.
