What happens before scar revision surgery?

The examination considers the scar's position, length, width, colour, thickness, flexibility and relationship to nearby movement. Your surgeon asks how it began, whether it has changed, and what treatments or operations have already been tried. They may photograph the area and mark the planned incision. The aim is to improve the scar's appearance or function, while the new wound will still need to heal.

Share allergies, previous anaesthesia problems, bleeding conditions, smoking or nicotine use, medicines and supplements. Tell the team about diabetes, immune conditions, active skin disease or a recent infection. Follow instructions about washing the area, eating and drinking, and medicines; never alter prescribed treatment without guidance. Arrange transport if sedation or anaesthesia is planned, and prepare a clean dressing area at home. Before surgery, report a new rash, open sore, fever, spreading redness or drainage near the scar. After surgery, seek advice for wound separation, persistent bleeding, increasing warmth, pus, fever, worsening pain or a rapidly expanding swelling. Sudden breathing difficulty or facial swelling requires emergency help.
