What happens before lymphoedema therapy?

The therapist asks when swelling began, where it is located, whether it changes during the day, and whether there is heaviness, tightness, pain or reduced movement. They inspect the skin and compare the affected area with the other side. They also review surgery, lymph-node treatment, infections, medicines and other conditions that can cause swelling.

The plan may include skin care, exercises, compression garments or bandaging, movement advice and hands-on techniques. A fitted garment should be selected by a trained professional, especially when swelling affects an arm, leg, breast, chest or genital area.

Wear clothing that allows the affected area to be examined and bring details of recent operations, radiation or other cancer treatment. Tell the therapist about broken skin, a rash, pain, numbness, infection symptoms or difficulty moving. Do not start tight compression or vigorous massage without advice, because the appropriate approach depends on the assessment.

Ask how to protect the skin, practise movement and monitor changes between visits. If you have had breast surgery, mention any arm, breast or chest swelling and show where it started.

Seek prompt medical advice for rapidly increasing swelling, redness, warmth, worsening pain, fever, chills or fluid from the skin, as these can signal an infection or another problem needing treatment. Seek emergency help for sudden breathlessness, chest pain or fainting.

What is causing or contributing to the swelling? Is compression suitable for me? Which skin changes need urgent attention? Can I exercise, fly or have blood pressure checks on the affected side?
