What happens before filler dissolving injection?

Hyaluronidase is used to break down hyaluronic-acid filler, so the clinician first needs to establish what product was placed, where it was injected and when. They inspect swelling, firmness, asymmetry, colour change, tenderness and skin temperature. A review of photographs or previous treatment records can help locate the product. The plan may involve a targeted amount in one area, with reassessment before any further treatment. Other filler materials may not respond in the same way.

Bring the filler name, injector details and treatment date if you have them. Explain any allergy, previous reaction to hyaluronidase, pregnancy, breastfeeding, medicines and active skin infection. Avoid applying makeup to the area unless instructed otherwise. Do not massage a painful or discoloured area while waiting for assessment. Ask what improvement can reasonably be expected and whether more than one assessment may be needed. Get urgent medical advice for rapidly increasing pain or swelling, pale or dusky skin, blisters, new vision changes, weakness, trouble speaking, breathing difficulty or widespread hives after filler. These symptoms need prompt assessment and should not wait for a routine dissolving appointment. A fever or spreading warmth and redness can also indicate infection.

Ask whether the filler is likely to contain hyaluronic acid, what area will be treated, how progress will be checked, and what temporary swelling or tenderness may occur. Confirm which symptoms require immediate help and when to return for review.
