What happens after skin cancer screening?

Many findings can be documented without immediate treatment. A spot may be photographed or measured for comparison, reviewed sooner, or sampled when its appearance warrants a tissue diagnosis. Screening identifies changes that deserve attention; it does not by itself confirm cancer. The recommendation depends on the spot's features, your history and whether it has changed.

Keep a note of which mole, patch or area was discussed and the date of the planned review. Follow instructions about photographs, self-checks and sun protection. If a biopsy is advised, ask how to prepare and when results will be discussed. Report a spot that changes in size, shape or colour, bleeds, crusts or remains sore rather than waiting for a routine appointment.

Arrange an earlier dermatology review for a rapidly changing lesion, a new mark that looks unlike your others, repeated bleeding or a sore that does not heal. Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, severe infection symptoms or sudden symptoms affecting vision or breathing.

Ask which findings need action, when each area should be reviewed, whether a photograph or biopsy is needed, and which changes should prompt an earlier visit.
