What happens after shoulder reduction?

A clinician may reassess the shoulder position, circulation, sensation, and movement of the hand and arm. Imaging can be used to confirm alignment or look for an associated fracture. Pain and muscle spasm may continue even though the joint is back in place. The supporting tissues can be vulnerable after a dislocation, so the shoulder may need a sling or another support for the period advised. A later review helps decide when to begin guided Physiotherapy and which movements to avoid.

Wear the support as instructed and keep the hand, wrist, and elbow moving only as advised. Avoid lifting, reaching overhead, or forcing the arm behind you until cleared. Use prescribed pain relief safely and keep the follow-up appointment, even if discomfort improves. Rehabilitation usually progresses from protected movement to controlled range, then strength and functional tasks. Do not try to relocate the shoulder yourself if it slips again.

Seek urgent care if the shoulder appears out of place again, pain suddenly becomes severe, or the hand is cold, pale, blue, numb, or weak. Return promptly for increasing swelling, fever, drainage from a wound, or inability to move the fingers. A fall or new impact while the shoulder is healing should also be assessed.

Ask how long to use the sling, which movements are restricted, when therapy begins, and when driving, work, lifting, or sport may be resumed. Ask what to do if the shoulder feels unstable or seems to move out of place.
