What Happens After Preconception Care?

Your clinician may have reviewed medicines, vaccinations, long-term conditions, nutrition, lifestyle, menstrual history, and family health. The follow-up depends on what was found: some people need only routine preparation, while others need treatment or a review before trying to become pregnant.

Preconception care prepares your health before pregnancy; it does not replace pregnancy care. If you become pregnant, contact the maternity or obstetric service recommended by your clinician so the first antenatal appointment can be arranged. Bring your medication list and any test or vaccination information.

A positive pregnancy test may change which medicines are suitable and when tests are offered. Do not stop prescribed treatment on your own, particularly for conditions such as epilepsy, diabetes, thyroid disease, high blood pressure, or mental health conditions. A clinician can balance pregnancy considerations with the need to keep your condition controlled.

Keep a written plan of recommended supplements, medicine changes, vaccinations, monitoring, and follow-up dates. Take supplements exactly as advised, eat regularly, avoid tobacco and recreational drugs, and check whether alcohol should be avoided while trying to conceive. If pregnancy does not occur or your cycles change, ask when a fertility review would be appropriate.

Once pregnancy is confirmed, book antenatal care promptly. The first visit usually establishes your medical history, estimates pregnancy timing, reviews medicines, and plans examinations and screening. If you were asked to complete a treatment or investigation before conception, clarify whether it should continue after a positive test.

Contact your clinician soon after a positive pregnancy test if you take regular medicine, have a long-term condition, or were advised to arrange early monitoring. Seek urgent medical care for severe abdominal or pelvic pain, heavy vaginal bleeding, fainting, or feeling seriously unwell during a possible or confirmed pregnancy.
