What happens after physiotherapy?

Short answer
After physiotherapy, your therapist reviews your progress and may continue home exercises, advance activity, or arrange further care.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- After a session
- Mild tiredness can occur; follow the agreed activity limits.
- The plan
- It may progress toward independent exercise, review, or another treatment.
What the next phase means
A session may leave the treated area tired or mildly uncomfortable as you practise movement and strength. The end of a course does not always mean that recovery is complete. Your therapist considers pain, movement, strength, balance, function, and how confidently you manage exercises. Progress may lead to fewer visits and more independent practice; limited progress may prompt a reassessment of the diagnosis, technique, or goals. After some operations, rehabilitation is part of the planned pathway, including after ACL Reconstruction or Microdiscectomy.
How to continue at home
Use the home programme exactly as demonstrated, including repetitions, rest, and any movement limits. Build activity gradually and note which tasks improve function or trigger symptoms. Ask how to modify an exercise if pain changes, rather than stopping every movement or pushing through sharp pain. Keep review appointments when scheduled so the plan can be adjusted. If surgery is being considered, your therapist and surgeon may coordinate preparation and recovery expectations, including around Total Knee Replacement.
When to seek care
Contact your clinician if pain, swelling, weakness, numbness, or loss of function is steadily worsening after treatment. Seek urgent care for new severe weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, chest pain, major breathing difficulty, or an injury that leaves a joint deformed or unusable. Sudden calf swelling with breathlessness needs urgent assessment.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which improvements should occur next, how to progress each exercise, when you can return to work or sport, and what would justify another review. Confirm who to contact if symptoms flare between sessions.
