What happens after NIPT?

The result is a screening result, not a diagnosis. The next step depends on whether the report is low probability, high probability, or unable to report, as well as your ultrasound findings and personal circumstances.

A low-probability result usually allows pregnancy care to continue as planned, while scheduled scans remain part of care. It does not check for every genetic or structural condition.

A high-probability result does not confirm that the baby has a condition. Your clinician may recommend genetic counselling, a detailed ultrasound, and a diagnostic test such as amniocentesis. An unable-to-report result can happen when the sample does not contain enough usable fetal DNA or cannot be analysed; your team will explain whether repeating screening or choosing diagnostic testing is suitable.

Arrange a results discussion so you understand which chromosome findings were included and what the laboratory wording means. Bring your ultrasound reports and a list of medicines or pregnancy concerns. If further testing is offered, ask what it can confirm, when results may be available, and how the information could affect pregnancy decisions.

Do not make a decision based on the NIPT label alone. Your care team can compare the screening result with your scan findings and explain the options, including choosing no further testing.

Contact your maternity team promptly if you have heavy bleeding, severe or persistent abdominal pain, leaking fluid, fever, fainting, or reduced fetal movement once you have been told to monitor movements. These symptoms need assessment regardless of your NIPT result.

Seek urgent help for severe pain, heavy bleeding, or feeling very unwell. A worrying screening result can also feel overwhelming; contact your clinician if anxiety is affecting sleep, eating, or daily activities.
