What happens after a musculoskeletal X-ray?

The images can show the position and shape of bones, joint alignment, and some signs of injury or wear. A normal-looking X-ray does not explain every cause of pain, because muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, and early changes may need a different assessment. Your clinician combines the image with your symptoms, examination, and injury history. If the X-ray does not answer the clinical question, they may arrange follow-up or consider another imaging test, such as an MRI.

Follow the instructions given after the appointment and ask when and how you will receive the report. Keep the affected area moving only within the limits advised for your injury; do not add strenuous activity simply because the scan is finished. Take prescribed medicines as directed and record changes in pain, swelling, strength, or movement. Bring the report and any images to future appointments, especially if another clinician is involved.

Seek urgent medical care for a limb that becomes cold, pale, blue, numb, or suddenly weak, or for severe pain after a significant injury. Prompt assessment is also needed if swelling rapidly worsens, a joint looks deformed, or you cannot use the limb as advised. Contact your care team if symptoms continue to worsen while you are waiting for the result.

Ask what the X-ray shows, which finding matches your symptoms, whether the result changes your activity, and when follow-up is planned. You can also ask why another scan might be useful and which warning signs should prompt earlier care.
