What happens after musculoskeletal ultrasound?

Ultrasound can display tendons, muscles, some ligaments, fluid, and movement of soft tissues while the joint is still or moving. The person performing the scan may explain observations, but the final interpretation should be connected with your examination and history.

If the findings fit an irritated tendon, bursa, or joint-related problem, your clinician may recommend activity changes, exercises, or further assessment. In selected situations, ultrasound guidance may be used when discussing a Cortisone Injection, but imaging does not make that treatment necessary.

The scan itself usually does not require recovery time. Ask what the images suggest, whether you can continue work or sport, and which movements to modify. Follow the exercise or rest plan provided, and monitor pain, swelling, strength, and range of motion. If the scan was part of an injection appointment, follow the separate dressing and activity instructions given for that procedure.

Arrange review if pain, swelling, weakness, or loss of movement continues or worsens despite the recommended changes. Seek urgent care for sudden severe pain after an injury, inability to bear weight, a deformed limb, rapidly increasing swelling, or new numbness and weakness. If an injection was also performed, fever, spreading redness, drainage, breathing difficulty, or facial swelling needs prompt assessment.

Ask which structure was examined, whether the finding explains your symptoms, what activity is safe, whether another test is needed, and how you will know if treatment is helping.
