What happens after membrane sweep?

Mild period-like cramps, pelvic pressure and a small amount of pink or brown mucus can occur after the examination. Some people notice contractions that settle, while others develop contractions that become longer, stronger and closer together. A sweep does not guarantee that labour will start, and your maternity team may discuss another sweep or formal induction if labour does not begin.

Take it easy if you feel sore, use a pad to observe bleeding and drink fluids. Follow the individual instructions from your midwife or obstetrician about monitoring contractions, resting and returning for review. Keep your maternity contact details available, and ask what to do if your waters break or contractions become regular.

Contact your maternity unit promptly for heavy or fresh-red bleeding, severe or persistent abdominal pain, reduced fetal movements, suspected ruptured membranes, fever or feeling unwell. Seek urgent help if you have difficulty breathing, fainting or severe pain. Do not wait for contractions if your care team has given you a specific reason to call.
