What happens after low-dose CT lung screening?

The report may describe no concerning finding, a small lung nodule for observation, or a finding that needs closer assessment. Nodules can have several causes and do not by themselves diagnose lung cancer. The radiologist compares the scan with earlier images when available and considers its appearance, size, location and change over time. Some findings outside the lungs may also be mentioned and may need separate follow-up.

Make sure you know who will provide the report and when to expect the next appointment. If repeat imaging is recommended, keep that appointment so the team can compare images over time. If a closer assessment is needed, this may involve a diagnostic CT, specialist review or another test. Bring previous scan reports and tell the clinician about smoking history, earlier cancer, infections and new symptoms. Screening is intended for people without warning symptoms; it should not replace a clinical assessment when symptoms are present.

Contact a clinician promptly for coughing up blood, a persistent or worsening cough, chest pain, unexplained breathlessness, repeated chest infections, or unexpected weight loss. Seek emergency care for severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, collapse or sudden intense chest pain. These symptoms need assessment regardless of whether a screening scan has been reported as reassuring.

Ask what the scan found, whether older images were compared, when the next scan or review is due, and what change would trigger further testing. Clarify which symptoms should prompt an earlier call and whether any finding outside the lungs needs separate attention.
